How Many Weeks Are in a Year?

The short answer is 52, the exact answer is 52.14, and the calendar answer is 52 or 53. Here is how they fit together.

Three correct answers

The question has three correct answers, depending on what you mean. A common year has 365 days, which is exactly 52 weeks and 1 day, or 52.14 weeks. A leap year has 366 days, which is 52 weeks and 2 days, or 52.29 weeks. Averaged over the Gregorian calendar, a year has 365.2425 days, which is 52.18 weeks.

The third answer is the one that counts in calendars and planning. Under the ISO week rule, every year has either 52 or 53 numbered weeks. The numbered weeks are whole Monday-to-Sunday blocks, so the leftover day or two is absorbed by the first and last week, and every few years there is enough left over to make a 53rd week.

Which years have 53 weeks?

A year has 53 ISO weeks if 1 January is a Thursday, or if it is a leap year and 1 January is a Wednesday. Looking at the calendar in the other direction, a year has 53 weeks if 31 December is a Thursday, or if it is a leap year and 31 December is a Friday.

Recent and coming examples: 2015, 2020 and 2026 have 53 weeks. 2032 and 2037 will have 53 weeks. All the years in between have 52, so 2027, 2028, 2029, 2030 and 2031 are short years. The gap between long years is usually five or six years, and over 400 years there are 71 of them. The third tab of the calculator shows the number for any year from 1 to 9999.

Weeks and weekdays

Each weekday occurs 52 times in every year, plus extra days. In a common year, the weekday of 1 January occurs 53 times. In 2026, 1 January is a Thursday, so there are 53 Thursdays and 52 of every other weekday. In a leap year two weekdays occur 53 times: those of 1 January and 2 January. 2028 begins on a Saturday, so it has 53 Saturdays and 53 Sundays.

There is a neat link with the ISO rule. A year has 53 ISO weeks exactly when it has 53 Thursdays, because every ISO week contains one Thursday and the Thursday decides which year the week belongs to. That is why 2026 has a week 53: 1 January and 31 December are both Thursdays. A year in which some other weekday occurs 53 times, such as 2027 with 53 Fridays, still has only 52 ISO weeks.

What it means for pay and budgets

The extra day changes real money. A person paid weekly gets 52 paychecks in most years. If the payday weekday occurs 53 times, there are 53. In 2026 a Thursday payday occurs 53 times, while a Friday payday occurs 52 times. A bi-weekly pay cycle has 26 pay dates in most years and 27 in some.

Monthly budgets built from weekly figures also drift. Dividing a year into 12 months of 4 weeks gives only 48 weeks. An average month has 4.35 weeks, which is 365.2425 divided by 12 and by 7. A weekly cost of 100 is about 435 per month, not 400, and about 5,214 per year.

Working weeks and school weeks

The number of weeks you actually work is smaller. A person with 5 weeks of holiday works about 47 weeks. In 2026 there are 261 weekdays, which is 52 weeks and 1 day of Monday-to-Friday time, and the public holidays of your country come off that number. The Workdays row in a date calculator is a quick way to count them for any range.

School years are shorter again. Many school systems run about 36 to 40 teaching weeks, plus holidays. A course described as a "12-week term" starting on Monday 26 October 2026 ends on Sunday 17 January 2027, which crosses New Year and week 53 and is a good test of any week-based plan.

Counting weeks between two dates

To count weeks between two dates, divide the number of days by 7. From Thursday 22 October 2026 to Friday 1 January 2027 there are 71 days, which is 10 weeks and 1 day. This is not the same as the difference in ISO week numbers, because week numbers restart at 1 in January. The week numbers 43 and 53 differ by 10, which agrees here only by luck of the calendar.

The safe way is to count days, divide by 7 and keep the remainder as days. If you need the numbered weeks that the period touches, count the week of the start date and the week of the end date and include both. A period from Thursday to the Friday ten weeks later touches 11 ISO weeks.

Quick answers

How many weeks are in a year? 52 full weeks plus one or two days. How many ISO weeks? 52, or 53 in a long year. How many weeks until Christmas? Count the days from today to 25 December and divide by 7. How many weeks in a month? On average 4.35, never exactly 4 except for February in a common year, which has exactly 28 days.

And how many weeks are left in the year? On 22 October 2026 there are 70 days to 31 December, which is 10 weeks exactly, and the calendar shows week 43 of 53. The number of weeks left depends on whether you count days or numbered weeks, so say which one you mean.
